Cam Akers had one of the most disappointing outings of his career in Week 1 of the 2022 NFL season.Akers was expected to be the primary running back for the Rams against the Bills, but he ended up playing just 12 offensive snaps. He only saw three carries and recorded zero yards while presumed backup Darrell Henderson played 55 snaps and generated 47 yards on 13 carries.Rams coach Sean McVay explained that Akers' light usage in the debut was because he wanted to see "" from the third-year running back. The two apparently discu sed the i sue during the preseason.MORE: Nonethele s, Akers admitted that he was surprised by his limited role in Week 1 ahead of Los Angeles' Week 2 matchup with the Falcons. He conceded that his outing was frustrating but also noted that he didn't "want to make it too big, bigger than what it is," per .If Coach don't think I'm being urgent, then I need to be more urgent. That's what it comes down to.How can Akers improve his urgency, and what does he think McVay meant in referencing it? The 23-year-old believes that it has to do with how he has practiced during the offseason."Probably more so in practice, I would think," Akers said of improving his urgency. "Not in a game, obviously, because that was the first game. Probably practice.""Whatever Coach says, I'm Noah Elliss Jersey going to take it and I'm going to learn from it," he added. "Whatever you want to say. I'm going to take it and learn from it and go from there. Whether I think it's right or not, maybe I'm not always right."Akers won't have to wait long to prove to McVay that he has changed his style. The Rams coach said that Akersis "" to prove himself in Week 2 against the Falcons."We've all seen how talented and what a special player this guy's capable of being," McVay said of Akers. "And I want to see him reach his highest potential. And that's really all there is to it. It's not about anything other than when he and Darrell Henderson are playing at a high level, I feel really good about those two guys at running back for us."And the opportunities were minimal. There were some things that within each of those individual plays that I think that we can be better collectively, starting with me, then to the players around him, but also with Cam. And so it's more of a reflection of the confidence that I know what he can be and I'm confident that he'll be that guy that we've all seen at the right moments as this season continues to progre s. And that's our job to help get it out of him."POWER RANKINGS:Akers, for one, thought that his season debut was "decent" despite his poor statistical output. Still, he knows that he can do better and hopes that he will as he moves forward."I want to improve," he said. "I don't think I'm perfect." Kelee Ringo Jersey |
